THE Action Congress (AC) has expressed disappointment at the on-going spat between the House of Representatives and the Senate over the review of the constitution, saying it goes a long way to show how seriously the lawmakers take their duties.
In a statement issued in Abuja, the party said the fact that both chambers could not agree on such a simple issue as who to chair the joint review panel and the decision of some members of the House to head to court to seek clarification on some sections of the same constitution they are supposed to review have shown they are ill-prepared for that task.
"It also says a lot about the calibre of most lawmakers. Perhaps, the fact that a number of them were selected rather than elected could explain their aversion for serious legislative work and their disposition to self-serving projects", it said.
AC said almost two years into their tenure, the lawmakers cannot point to even one bill they have passed that could make life easier for the suffering masses they are supposed to be representing in the House and the Senate.
"Yet, these feuding legislators have gone a long way to feather their own nests, awarding themselves obscene perks at a time of unprecedented suffering in the land.
"Now, we believe Nigerians can better understand what we have been saying about the need to have a level playing field, to have free and fair elections that would throw up the right people that will help lift the country to great heights and make life better for our people", the party said.
It said for the time remaining for the legislators to complete their tenure, they are better off enjoying their good fortunes than trying to mock Nigerians under the guise of reviewing a constitution they barely understood.
"Nigerians will have another chance to elect their representatives in about two years and they will definitely not forget their experiences since the current dispensation came into being in 2007. Hopefully, with a level playing field, things will turn out differently", AC said. |
