A member of the House of Representatives, representing Ikono/Ini Federal Constituency of Akwa Ibom State and a member House Committee on Education, Honourable Ini Udoka, has said that corruption was institutionalised by the military when they ruled this country.

Udoka acknowledged the steps taken by President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua to solve Nigeria's problems and believes that Yar'Adua will take Nigeria to enviable heights.

Speaking on the fight against corruption, Udoka said that "The National Assembly on its part is seriously fighting corruption which is endemic in our country, which has resulted in the power probe, probe in the oil and gas sector and probes on government finances. All these are done to reposition the nation."

Udoka went further to say that; "Democracy is different from military rule, stressing that in military rule, fire brigade approach is used in solving national issues which end up causing more harm than good to our nation, but in civil rule like we have today, decisions pass through processes. By the time decision is taken, it would have been critically analysed, scrutinised and what comes out of it would be a very positive thing that would move any sector forward," he said.

The lawmaker, who said he will not blame the former President Olusegun Obasanjo or President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua administrations for the failure of electricity in our country, said that this problem of power is as a result of neglect during the military era, stressing that the problem accumulated in a way that makes it hard for the civilian administration to flush out immediately saying, it needs a gradual process before it will be corrected.
