Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, yesterday decried violence that characterised the National Assembly elections, saying that do-or-die approach to politics is old fashioned. He lamented the bomb explosion that killed 25 youth corps members in Niger State, urging a probe of the incident for the purpose of bringing the perpetrators of the mayhem to book. Tinubu spoke with reporters shortly after he was accredited to vote at Polling Booth Number 047, Sunday Adigun Street, Alausa, Ikeja, where he and her mother, Alhaja Abibat Mogaji, later voted at noon. He hailed the improvement recorded by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) within the week, enjoining the commission to show more commitment to free and fair elections. Tinubu said, although election are held in fractions in the country, it is better than to conduct all the elections in a shoddy manner and plunge the country into chaos. He said: “ The elections are not holding in some places. But it is better to correct errors and problems upfront than allowing it to degenerate into chaos and litigations. We had a courageous statement from the electoral umpire. Let us look at the causes of the problems. All of them emanated from the fact that there were a lot of interferences in the process, leading to the awards of contracts. “ They saw the budget of over eighty billion. They did not leave this man to really award the contracts for the exercise. Right from the registration, we had a lot of information that the National Assembly, the Appropriation Committee, INEC Committee, and the Presidency interfered in the process, recommending contractors, bombarding him with requests. So, it is easy to sabotage or make part of the process to fail. “The problem is bigger than what we are seeing. Who are those contractors? Who recommended them? What was the process used? There was the Nigeria factor and everybody wanted to participate in the sharing of the cake. If the umpire is left with its own discretion and its own evaluation and there is integrity in the process of selection of contractors and all that early enough and the system is effective, it will be easy to build control in the system. Let us live with whatever hiccups we have in the democratic system. But what we will not accept or tolerate is, if it is a deliberate sabotage”. The party leader called for the scrutiny of the electoral process to expose those who made polls impossible. Lauding INEC for yesterday’s elections, Tinubu said: “The process today, so far, especially the accreditation is going on. I will limit myself to that, until after the collation and announcement of results. Then, I will commend on the overall. But so far, the accreditation is effective, the security is effective. You see road blocks and soldiers and they are not intimidating people. “I will commend the security process. Today, in my polling booth, the accreditation sheet is freshly generated. It is in colour, not in black and white, or photocopy as it was done last week. There is an improvement in the control mechanism. So far, so good”. He however frowned at the violence that characterised preparations for the exercise, especially the bomb explosion in Niger State that terminated the lives of youth corps members on national duty. He observed that since former president Olusegun Obasanjo introduced do-or-die politics, the nation has been licking the wounds. Tinubu said:”The most unfortunate thing is that Nigeria is canvassing itself as a dangerous place for democracy. This do-or-die philosophy and doctrine of our past leaders, and posturing of former President Obasanjo, has sent a dangerous signals across the country. A former Head of State, who claimed to have fought a battle to unite the country, who was taken into confidence and respected, sent a wrong signal. “What signal are we sending out? Youth corpers and innocent souls are now victims. The incident of bombing is regrettable; must be condemned by all Nigerians. The youths of the country have suffered. Their parents are in agony. The entire nation should mourn them. It is the failure of this government. The party in power has shed so much blood. how many people died in Port Harcourt? How many people died in Uyo? How many people died in Katsina?
